About the Practitioner

I began my professional life in academia.  While a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, I taught psychology and research methodology at both the University and at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, IA. After graduate school I joined APM Management Consultants (now part of Computer Sciences Corporation), a boutique consultancy focusing on the healthcare industry. Though my work in both arenas had an impact on patient well-being, the impact was perhaps too indirect.

I wanted to work directly with clients to help them improve their physical and mental health. As I explored options, I learned about Zen Shiatsu. I was intrigued to learn of the therapy’s rich history and rooting in the traditions of Chinese Medicine.  Running through the numerous treatment modalities associated with Chinese Medicine are the beliefs that balance is essential to optimal health and that each person has within themselves the ability to promote their own healing.

Convinced of the value of Zen Shiatsu, I completed my training at Zen Shiatsu Chicago in Evanston and am a Certified Practitioner of Asian Bodywork with AOBTA and practice in Chicago and Evanston. My clients receive bodywork for different reasons and therefore, I strive to meet them where they are, so to speak.  If they are interested in Chinese Medicine or in recommendations for their own self-care, I am happy to share that knowledge with them.  If they simply want to relax or find relief from aches and pains, I am pleased to help them achieve that goal.

In my practice I pay particular attention to my client’s emotions, areas of tension or weakness in their body, and the shifting of energy in their body during the session.  Clients sometimes experience unanticipated and at times intense emotions during their shiatsu sessions.  I believe in helping them remain grounded during those occurrences. While I do not counsel my clients or intentionally try to elicit emotional reactions, I can help them breathe and remain present through their reactions, help balance their energy during the session, and recommend they further explore what happened (with a therapist or on their own).

If you have questions about how Zen Shiatsu may benefit you, please contact me.

Cheers!
